Public Survey on Dental Implant Surgery

Korea 13-14 July, 2018

Public Survey on Dental Implant Surgery
At 64.5%, surgical technique used in implant placement was the most important factor to consider while choosing the procedure.
A public survey was conducted for two days on July 13 and 14 at Seoul Yeouido station and Cheonggyesan station. 598 male and female adults above age 20 were asked what they considered to be most important when getting dental implant surgery. This survey was conducted in order to investigate the public’s awareness on this topic.

The goal of the survey was to understand the attractiveness of digital implants. The survey investigated the change of perspective before and after the individual was provided information about things to consider before getting an implant surgery including brands, medical staffs, surgical methods such as analogue or digital, costs for each method, average number of days needed for treatment and number of hospital visits required. In order to ensure transparency and credibility the surveying company was undisclosed.

First, before receiving any information on dental implant surgery the respondents were asked to respond intuitively on what they thought was most important. As expected, the highest percentage of 50% (299 persons) of all respondents answered, “hospital/doctor”. Following that was “surgical method” at 26.9% (161 persons), “cost of implant surgery” at 17.4% (104 persons) and “implant brand” at only 5.7% (34 persons).

After this, the respondents were provided with information on two types of dental implant surgeries. The traditional flap surgery and the digitally guided flap-minimal surgery. They were also given information regarding the cost of each type of surgery, average number of days needed for treatment and average number of hospital visits required. The respondents were then asked the same question again. This time, the percentage of people who answered “surgical method” increased from the previous percentage of 37.6% to 64.5% (386 persons), meaning that they selected digitally guided flap-minimal surgery. The highest number of people chose this answer for the second-round. The next highest number of respondents chose the answer “hospital/doctor” at 21.6% (129 persons) followed by “cost of implant surgery” at 9.5% (57 persons) and lastly “implant brand” at 4.3% (26 persons).

The respondents were asked the reason why they shifted their perspective to digitally guided flap-minimal surgery after they were provided information on implant surgeries. Most respondents replied, “because flap-minimal surgery seems less painful and ensures faster recovery.” Most people who already had experienced implant surgery before said, if they had known about digital implant surgery then, they would have chosen the digitally guided flap-minimal surgery.

Through this survey, we were able to realize that most people consider hospital, doctor and cost as important factors when getting surgery. However, when it comes to implant treatments, most people feel it is more important to choose a treatment method that is less painful and less suffering for the patient. The survey was also able to find that people believe it is important for the medical staff to provide patients with sufficient consultation so that they can make an informed decision on which implant treatment to get.
