DIO Developed the World First ‘Tooth Preparation Automated Robot’

Succeeded in the preclinical test of 'Auto Prep' incorporating 3D digital technology.
DIO, a leading digital dentistry company (CEO Jinbaek Kim), recently opened a new horizon for digital treatment, and is drawing attention to itself.
On the 17th, DIO successfully conducted a preclinical test of the world's first automated robotic system for tooth prep treatment incorporating 3D digital technology at Yonsei University Wonju Severance Christian Hospital (Professor Byungho Choi and Seungmi Jeong).
In general, prosthesis treatment goes through four steps: △diagnosis and treatment plan △tooth extraction and impression taking △prosthesis fabrication and △prosthesis placement, and normally, digitalization was difficult because it depended entirely on the doctor’s experience and skill level.

Unlike before, in this automated robotic system, based on patient CT and oral scan data, doctors use a CAD system only for doctors to design preps and prostheses on a computer in advance, and the automated robot is designed according to the design in the actual oral cavity. It is a system that shortens the treatment period and dramatically improves the patient's convenience by extracting the teeth and then placing the pre-fabricated prosthesis in a digital method.

In addition, the core technologies include auto merging technology that automatically matches patient's CT data and oral scan data, S/W that performs prep design and prosthetic design based on merging data, and the motion tracking technology in which a robot tracks patient’s motions. It is a technology convergence that has a robot with 6-axis and control system with an accuracy of 0.05mm.

In particular, the preclinical test of the automated preparation robot system can be said to be an important result showing the possibility of digitalization from A to Z in dental treatment.
In this system, the core elements of the fourth industrial revolution, such as data of digital imaging devices, design software with AI, 3D printing material that precisely manufactures prostheses, and precision robots and control systems, are convergence of the innovative development of digital dentistry.
In the future, based on the fundamental technology, it is expected that the entire process from the diagnosis and planning stage of dental treatment to the actual treatment stage can be expanded to the era of digitalization and automation.

Mr. Jin Baek Kim who led DIO’s innovation single handedly, commented that, “You cannot survive simply by following a path that has already been made. In that aspect, the automatic preparation robot system introducing a new digital prosthetic treatment technology that has not existed in world, is a huge deal.” and emphasized that “DIO is not only preclinical, but through strong and continuous technological innovation and engineer training, we will put all our efforts into building and commercializing possible automated robot systems that can do everything from implant placement to neurotherapy and tooth preparation.”

Meanwhile, the total development investment cost that went in this automated robot system project was 6.8 billion won (4.2 billion won from government support and 2.6 million won from private investment), and four organizations including ‘DIO’, ‘Yonsei University Wonju Industry Academic Cooperation Foundation’, ‘Dongguk University Industry Academic Cooperation Foundation’, and ‘Dunamis Dental Corporation’ participated. The project period is from December 2016 to November 2020.
