Personal interview was held with DIO to hear the present and future outlook of DIO under the slogan of ‘Innovation upon innovation’ with the goal of becoming the best company in the area of digital dentistry.

01 DIOnavi., expected to exceed 400,000 mark in the accumulated number of implant placed

DIO, which is celebrating its 32nd anniversary, has been pursuing the implant business over the last 18 years. DIO has been expanding through not only the domestic, but also the overseas market continuously, and entered the digital area since 2010. As a result, the digital dentistry of DIO was successful in achieving groundbreaking conversion into a ‘company specializing in digital dentistry’ through launching of ‘DIOnavi.’, a digitalized surgical guide system, in 2014.

DIOnavi., completed through numerous trials and errors, succeeded in producing the ideal and best combination of CT data and oral scan data, that is, capable of increasing the accuracy. As a result, DIOnavi. secured approximately 600 users within 2 years of launching its surgical guide system that considered both the occlusion and stress dispersion of the patients.

Since then, DIOnavi. exceeded 200,000 mark in the accumulated number of implant placed within 4 years of launching in 2018 and recorded more than 400,000 implant placed by the end of last year.

An interested party of DIO stated that, “DIOnavi. is continuing on with its reputation as the representative digital guide system used most extensively in Korea since its launching in 2014. After having reached the 100,000 implant placement mark in 2017, it has exceeded 200,000 mark in the accumulated number of implant placements in October 2018,” and that, “it is a growth that exceeded the performances achieved in 3 previous years within a year.”

According to DIO, DIOnavi. appears to have surpassed the 400,000 implant placement mark last year. DIO explained that 300,000 mark in the accumulated number of implant placed was recorded on the basis of the guides produced and supplied by DIO and, if the numbers directly produced by the individual dental clinics and hospitals are to be included, 400,000 mark in the accumulated number of implant placed would have easily surpassed by the end of last year.

I met Mr. Jinbaek Kim on the 28th of last month in the midst of the fear of rapid proliferation of COVID 19 sweeping throughout the country. Mr. Kim, in spite of the urgency of having to cope with the pandemic, emphasized that, “I visited the Daegu sales headquarters yesterday (27th of last month) to encourage the local staffs and boosted the morale of all the employees of DIO throughout the country through video conference connecting the entire sales network in Korea,” and that, “in concordance with the efforts of the government to transparently and assertively cope with the current state, the workers at the frontline of the industry also need to cope with the given situations without becoming daunted while taking care of the health of oneself and those around them.” I had opportunity to hear the future visions of DIO from Mr. Kim who stated that, “Nowadays, I am reminded of the countless difficulties that we confronted and overcame as DIO pursued implant business over the last 20 years.”
Q. Recently, DIO has been achieving outstanding performances in the overseas markets.
As the results of having steadfastly strove towards the goal of collecting 300,000 cases of application of DIOnavi. to clinical settings set at the initial stage of its launching, we reached the 300,000 mark in the number of guides that DIO produced and supplied. If we were to include the guides that are directly produced by dental clinics and hospitals, we are certain that we have achieved more than 400,000 implant placements with DIOnavi.
DIO is able to achieve the continuing trend of successes in the overseas market definitely as the results of having focused on ‘digitalization’. In the case of advanced overseas countries particularly in the USA and Europe, global brand companies have firmly established roots with vantage points in the relevant markets. As such, DIO targeted the niche market with digital DIOnavi., which appears to have worked excellently. It was possible obviously because of the recognition of our outstanding technological capabilities.
Following the contract for large scale export in the USA and excellent performances in China, we expect to hear wonderful news from South America including Mexico, etc., as well as from Japan, Taiwan, Australia and India, and European countries, etc.
Q. What would be your management philosophy that you have accumulated while leading the implant business over the last 20 years?
I firmly believe that we need not to be afraid of the changes not only in the medical but also in the entire social environments, and, on the contrary, should lead such changes. Company motto of DIO is ‘Innovation upon innovation’. I believe this short phrase contains the gist of our management philosophy.
‘Digitalization’ is an unavoidable trend given the characteristics of technology intensive dental medicine and clinical dentistry. This signified conversion of paradigm rather than simple modification of tools, and I believe those capable of securing vantage point in the digital dentistry will determine and control the dominance in the dental industry in the future.
Obviously, this fundamentally entails countless trials and errors as well as the bitter experiences of failures. The trials and errors we experience in developing DIOnavi. may only be a tip of the iceberg in comparison to those DIO need to undergo in the future. Accordingly, DIO is devoted to unsparingly providinge a full range of investment to perfect digital dentistry.
Q. There has been extremely high level of interest in UV Activator2 recently.
Ranging from the process of developing DIOnavi. to the development and mass production of UV Activator2, we had our full share of the bitter experiences of failures. Through such process, we were able to develop a product for which ‘innovation was added upon innovation’.
UV Activator2 is literally one of the most innovative products in our industry. It has been proven through numerous research results that UV irradiation of the implant surface produces marked effects on better osseointegration in the initial stage. However, the issue at hand was how it should be applied to achieve the necessary usefulness of UV irradiation in the market. As the result of our ceaseless researches without giving up, we were able to launch UV Activator2 in the market. I can confidently state that combination of DIOnavi. and UV Activator2 will create a new paradigm in the clinical dental implant industry.

The display cupboard at the Information Desk of the Newton Dental Hospital is piled up with the digital implant surgical guide that Dr. Son, Hyunlak, the director of the hospital, personally produced by using DIOnavi. I met with Dr. Son who has introduced and and applying the digital system to all the treatment process from the time of the patient’s first visit to receiving treatment and going home to hear the personal account of what changes the combination of DIO digital solution and UV Activator2 has brought to his hospital.
Q. I understand that you are assertively applying digital dentistry.
Although I was not well-aware before I enrolled into the dental college, I realized that many of the areas in dentistry is technology intensive while studying in the dental college. In particular, it has become a reality to be reckoned as I began treatment at my own clinic after graduation.
As my clinical skill improved, I experienced greater thirst for capability to execute procedures more accurately and for the system capable of realizing it. Then, I encountered DIOnavi. I participated in part of the technology development rather than being a simple user and I am currently applying DIOnavi. in almost all of my implant treatments at the hospital.
Q. Can you explain the digital ‘DIOnavi.’ system?
There are some people who ask and comment that digitalization is applied only by ‘those who particularly love digitalization technologies’ and ‘novice in implant procedures’, etc. Although such comments are true to certain extent, application of digitalization technology is equipped with an extensive range of advantages that cannot be explained only with the concept of simply switching to more convenient tools.
The foremost and fundamental differentiating feature of ‘DIOnavi.’ is the ‘accuracy’. Ultimately, it is possible to define the differentiation of the individual systems by means of the accuracy they are capable of achieving.
Another differentiating feature of DIOnavi. is its capability to govern ‘time’ involved in the execution of the procedures. If the digital system is introduced, it is unavoidable for both the surgeon and patient to follow the procedures from the beginning to the end according to plans established in advance. Therefore, it is possible to relatively plan the time spent in dealing with the patient. For dentists who manage and operate their own clinics would readily and greatly agree that proper control of the chair time plays significant role in successful management of the dental clinic.
Q. I am curious about the combination of UV Activator2 and DIOnavi.
The model prior to the development of the UV Activator2 took about 15~20 minutes for the UV irradiation. Although it was an amazing technological feat, there were limitations in immediately coping with a wide range of situations including replacement of implant sizes, etc. when applied to the actual clinical circumstances. UV Activator2 which reduced the UV irradiation time to only 20 seconds by markedly supplementing the shortcomings the previous model can truly be deemed as the most innovative product in the dental industry. I doubt if there would be any reason not to use the combination of DIOnavi. and UV Activator2 if it is possible to secure initial stability after the placing the implant and complete the prosthesis seating within a short period of time through application of the UV irradiated implant.
